Geography the Basics (4): Geography Basic Principles

In analyzes of geosphere in daily life, geography basic principles are used theoretically. Those principles consist of spread, interaction, chorology and description principles.

Spread Principle
Geosphere phenomena (nature or human) spread on earth surface. This spreading has large deviation. With analyzing and describing various geosphere phenomena, we can gasp their relationship. Furthermore, we also can predict the possibility of next phenomena happened. For example, flood. Through an observation in flood area spreading, we can anticipate for the next rainy season.

Interaction Principle
Geosphere phenomena in a space have relationship each other. After we see phenomena spreading in a space, then we can gasp their relationship each other. This principle helps us gasping relationship between nature and human. From that relationship, we can describe nature characteristic of that space. For example, we can know how the flood happens. Which factor (nature or human or both) does cause the flood?

Chorology Principle
This principle is a comprehensive principle which unites other principles. This principle is a modern one. In chorology principle, phenomena analyzed from their spreading together with their interaction in space.

Description Principle
Description principle explains geosphere phenomena as the cause and effect from phenomena interaction. This principle gives a more advanced description about the phenomena. The description is not only described verbally, but also using more descriptive tools such as map, diagram, graphic and table.

So in this lesson plan, we encourage you to overview all of these principles. The more advanced the principle you use, the more ability you need to fulfill the whole description, but you get more descriptive information. I suggest you to use the principle based on the situation you face and what for you will use the information you will get. The simple phenomena for non-academic audience maybe just need the simple one. The more complex phenomena for academic audience or purposes will charge you the more comprehensive principle and approach.
